Lab Girl Summary

Throughout reading Lab Girl by Hope Jahren, I learned about overcoming the impossible and to never give up and to keep trying not matter the roadblock you are faced with. In Lab Girl Hope Jahren is a Geobiologist, and jus like you I had no clue what that was, so I googled it and it turns out it means the scientific research that explores the interactions between the physical Earth and the biosphere. Jahren does this by studying trees, flowers, seeds, and soil. In Lab Girl Jahren talks about family, friends and her success as a scientist.

Towards the begin of Jahren she grew up in a small town in Minnesota. There, she felt at home and began to decide that she would become a scientist. Most nights, she and her father spent the at lab working and doing little fun experiments, and after they would walk home through the cold Minnesota night. Though she couldn’t figure out what was missing from her family, Jahren grew up missing the love of there family

Shortly after Jahren to pursue her career in becoming a scientist she went to Berkeley and graduated. This is also where she meet her lab partner for the rest of her career. His name was Bill. Bill was serious and intelligent person and they connected immediately. Jahren went out to find some kind of funding to get Bill a place in the lab where she worked, Jahren did this because of the relation they made when going thru school at Berkeley. They soon found themselves make plans to have their very own lab together.

When Jahren got her first job, Bill moved with her, they never had a romantic connection, but the two were family to each other in ways that their real families were not.  Together, they went out to study different types of plant science though Jahren had trouble to get recognition and funding for their new work. Their efforts meet with had little success in the academic part of things, but they stayed focus one having their own lab. When Jahren felt scared her fears of failure, Bill stepped in to try and help encourage her to not give up  and to give it some more time.

Bill was something of a loner. He was missing part of one hand and had a horrible childhood because of it. He confided in Jahren that he did not participate in any group activities, nor did he ever date. He apparently never had any real friends, either. Jahren knew in her heart that Bill would always have a place in her life as her family and in her work as a scientist. Through those early years, Jahren struggled with manic-depression until a doctor recognized her symptoms and helped her get on a medical regimen that helped.

While working at Johns Hopkins, Jahren met a man named Clint. Clint was a mathematician, Jahren also ending up get married to him later down the road. And soon to follow the marriage Jahren became pregnant. Early in Her life she got prescribed medication to help her cope with some of her past experiences in her childhood, and as a result of becoming pregnant she had to stop all medication which in turn sent her spiraling into a serious depression. To a point of no return. She was hospitalized for long periods and suffered through the first few months after giving birth until she could safely, go back on to some of the medications.

Jahren was worried that she would not be able to show her son the love that she had missed as a child, but she soon found that she was completely devoted to him. In an way to end the of silence between parents and children in her family, she showed him her love at every second she could in hopes of not having him grow up the way she did and how miserable she was.

In the end of the book Clint landed a permanent position at the University of Hawaii, as a teacher and the new family  moved there shortly after Clint accepted the position, the move included Bill. Together Bill and Jahren set up yet another lab and continued their work in Hawaii and Jahren and Clint raised her son with love and care.
